Hugh Dale Harvey

1942 – 2023

Funeral services for Hugh Dale Harvey, 80, will be held on Sunday, April 2, at 2:30 p.m., at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mr. Harvey died on March 25, 2023. He was born on September 5, 1942, to Hugh Harvey and Margie Dale Decker. 

Mr. Harvey grew up in Rains County and worked the farm with his parents. While attending high school, he received a Lone Star Farmer Degree at the annual state FFA Convention. He graduated from Rains ISD in 1960, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served four years while stationed at Camp Pendleton. He was honorably discharged in June of 1964.

In November of 1960, he married Barbara June Miller, and they were married for 23 years. Their daughter, Paula, was born in 1963. Upon leaving the military, they settled in the Dallas area, where he worked briefly for a bakery. He worked for Ford Motor Company in Dallas until the plant closed in 1969 and he was transferred to the Detroit location where he stayed for another six months. The family moved to San Diego and he started his career in finance. The family moved back to the Dallas area in 1971 and he continued his finance career while working for The Associates, among others.

They had their second daughter, Sheila, in 1974. He started his own company in 1989, Cherokee Services Company, which he continued to run for the next 30+ years.

In 2007, he moved to Emory to be closer to his mother. He loved to maintain the land and was known to get the tractor stuck.

Mr. Harvey was an avid reader. He would be seen with a camera at family events and took a large number of pictures. He spent a lot of time researching family genealogy and enjoyed sharing what he learned with others. He was also an avid gun collector. 

Mr. Harvey is survived by his daughters, Paula Johnson and husband Bobby and Sheila Harvey; grandchildren, Samantha Johnson, Joseph White, Joshua Johnson and Benjamin Reid; great- grandson, Jackson Frey; brother-in-law and best friend of 65 years, James Miller  and wife Peggy; aunt, Ann Staggs; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home.

A visitation for Mr. Harvey will be held one hour prior to the service.
