Earnest Woods

1945 – 2024

Funeral services for Earnest Woods, 79, will be held on Friday, January 3, at 11:00 a.m., at Emory Methodist Church. Interment will be at a later date at Evergreen Memorial Garden Cemetery in Mahtomedi, Minnesota.

Mr. Woods died on December 29, 2024 in Emory. He was born on February 16, 1945, to Russel and Minnie Woods, in Wheeler, Wisconsin.

Mr. Woods was welcomed as one of 23 children. From his earliest days, he demonstrated the exceptional work ethic and generous spirit that would define his life, helping not only on his family’s farm but also lending a hand to neighboring farmers.

He met Delores “Dee” Larson in 1967. Their love story blossomed swiftly, and they married just six weeks later, and they were married 57 years.

He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict and earned the Purple Heart for his courage under fire, along with a marksman’s medal and other commendations. Following his honorable discharge in May 1969, he built a sterling 33-year career at 3M in St. Paul. He was a machine operator, lab technician and van driver. A proud veteran, he devoted himself to serving his fellow service members through leadership positions in the Military Order of the Purple Heart, rising to the ranks of chapter commander, district commander, and state commander. His commitment to veterans extended through his active membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and American Legion.

In 2005, he and Delores moved to Lake Fork and he found joy in hunting and fishing. He always had a story to tell and strangers to meet. He attended Emory Methodist Church, where he delighted in driving for the after school kids club.

His greatest joy was his family, which included his wife and daughter, Dawn.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ernie, Jr.; his parents; 17 sisters; 5 brothers; and other family and friends.

In his honor, donations may be made to Paws for Purple Heart.

A visitation will be held the day of the service, at 9:30 a.m. at Emory Methodist Church.
