Melvin John Shumate, 86, of Emory, died on January 12, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on June 22, 1936, in Rains County to John and Minnie Shumate.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; son, Dennie; daughter, Leslie Taylor and husband Randy; stepdaughters, Belinda and Tonya; three grandchildren, Corey Taylor, Christina and husband Jimbo Cooper, and Mitchell and wife Destiny; sister, Merlene Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Auburn, Marley, Dani, Jace, Skylar and Dylan; and great-great-granddaughter, Mercy Jo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marvin; sisters, Marcelle and Mauretta; mother of his children, Shirley; and great-grandson, Jacob.
